Is Ben & Jerry's suitable for vegetarians?
Yes, Ben & Jerry's is suitable for a vegetarian diet - right down to our marshmallow. We're happy to say that the marshmallow in Phish Food is made with pectin, not gelatine, so as a vegetarian, you can enjoy all the Phish Food you want!

How about vegans?
No, as Ben & Jerry's is made with fresh cream, milk and eggs.

Which of your flavours are certified kosher?
With the exception of Pulp Addiction, (no longer sold in the UK), which contains Cointreau, all of our flavours are certified kosher. The letter K after the ingredient declarations on the tub indicates our kosher certification.

Does Ben & Jerry's contain eggs?
Yes, all of our ice creams contain either egg yolks or egg whites.

Are the eggs pasteurised?
We do not use raw eggs in our product. As do all commercial ice cream makers, we use only eggs that have been pasteurised. Pasteurisation kills salmonella and other disease organisms that can sometimes be present in raw eggs.

Do you use milk and/or cream products with rBGH?
All of our milk and cream come from dairy farmers who have pledged not to treat their cows with rBGH. We work constantly with our suppliers of ingredients other than milk to ensure that all of the ingredients used in our products are as wholesome as possible. However, it is possible that some ingredients we use such as milk chocolate, cookie dough, brownies, etc. contain milk from cows treated with this artificial hormone.



Ben & Jerry's has a proactive approach to addressing the concerns of persons with food allergies. We work closely with all of our ingredient suppliers to verify all ingredient components, including ingredients in natural flavours, colours, and spices that might be of concern to persons with specific food sensitivities. We insure that this information is then included on the ingredient label of our product.

Ben & Jerry's is a member of the Food Allergy Network and the Food Allergy Resource and Research Program. These important groups provide updated information and support for people dealing with food allergies. It is the recommendation of these groups that, because lists of flavours may be replicated and become outdated, the safest approach is to read the label each time a purchase is made. We recognise that reading labels can be time-consuming and tedious; however, it is the best way for us to insure that you receive the information you need to enjoy our products free of worry as to their contents.


Do any of your products contain gluten?
If our product contains gluten, its presence would be indicated on the label by the words "wheat flour" or "flour."

Do any of your products contain soy?
If soy is used in any form in our product, its presence would be preceded by the word "soy," as for instance, "soy lecithin."

Do any of your ice creams contain corn products?
Corn derivatives would be indicated on our label by use of the word "corn" followed by the derivative, such as "corn syrup" or "high fructose corn syrup."

Do any of your products contain peanuts or peanut oil or other nut products?
Any product containing peanuts or peanut oil or other nut products would show those ingredients listed on the label.

Flavours that contain our chocolate fudge pieces, though they are free of peanut derivatives, are processed on the same lines as peanut-containing products. We are working with the supplier to have these items made on dedicated lines but at the present there is a chance that traces of nuts may be found in some of our non-nut flavours.

Is there caffeine in the coffee extracts you use to flavour your products?
Our coffee extracts do contain caffeine. The amount varies from 19 to 36 mg per 1/2 cup serving depending on the particular flavour. By comparison, a cup of coffee contains from 75 to 150 mg of caffeine.



Am I supposed to be able to scoop your ice cream right out of the package?
Our ice cream contains less air than most others and is denser in texture. In fact, if you weigh a 500ml tub of Ben & Jerry's and a 500ml tub of another brand, you'll see that our product weighs more because of this. To make scooping a little easier on your arm and a lot easier on your spoon, let it temper by leaving it at room temperature for a few minutes before scooping. Sometimes we'll toss a pint in the microwave for a few seconds if we can't wait to dig in!

What's the most popular flavour?
Currently Phish Food is the number one seller across the UK.

Why are there so many more flavours available in the US?
It's an age thing. Our parent company in the US has about 15 years on us here in the UK, so they have had the chance to develop a much bigger range for their audience. You'll also find that in supermarkets in the US have much more room to display bigger ranges across all types of products than we do here in the UK.
